Question: I have a charged-off account with Navy Federal but now a debt collector has it. Navy Federal is still reporting it on my credit reports. I called a while ago and they stated they no longer had my debt. Who do I pay now? It’s a company named Weltman.
Weltman, Weiss, and Reis Co., LPA also known as Weltman is a law firm who specialize in debt collection and recovery.
Navy Federal is still reporting your account because Weltman has not purchased your debt. They are working with Navy Federal to collect your debt. Navy Federal still owns the debt.
If you decide to pay the debt…
-Verify with Weltman that they are a law firm and attorneys.Confirm their role in this process.
-Verify with Weltman that the debt is legally collectable in your state. Double-check for yourself. Make sure the account is not outside the statute of limitations.
-Try to negotiate removal from your credit reports. They may not agree but it doesn’t hurt to ask.
-Make sure Navy Federal still owns the debt.
-Do not pay with your debit card. Get a prepaid card or use a virtual card number you can change.
-Make sure to get a receipt.
-Make sure the balance updates to $0 in 30 to 45 days.
