The iodine clock reaction is a classic chemical experiment that demonstrates reaction rates and chemical kinetics in a dramatic way. It involves mixing two clear solutions that suddenly turn dark blue after a short delay. This colour change is due to the formation of a starch-iodine complex.
In the reaction, iodide ions (I⁻) are oxidized to iodine (I₂) by hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) in an acidic solution. The free iodine is then temporarily "trapped" by thiosulfate ions until all the thiosulfate is used up. Once that happens, the free iodine reacts with starch, producing the sudden blue colour.
