Reflecting on my Vows as a Passionist

The Passionists of the Holy Spirit Province (Australia, NZ, PNG, Vietnam) live in the 21st century as “active contemplatives,” maintaining a healthy and fulfilling balance between ministry and prayer. Everything about our life is based on the Passion of Jesus, or as St Paul of the Cross (our Founder) calls it: “The greatest work of God’s love.”

While our traditional ministries have been leading retreats and parish missions, we also explore and accept other ministries that enable us to keep alive the memory of the Passion, to minister to the Suffering Christ of today. St Paul once wrote, “The zeal for the ministry of the Cross is ingenious,” and indeed that zeal has taken us to 63 countries, seeking the marginalised in our society.

We are only able to do this because of the community that we live in and draw support from. By living community life, we are nourished and built up, enabling us to live lives of prayer, ministry, and witness to the Love that touches each one of us.

Our Provincial, Fr. Tom McDonough CP, wrote about our Passionist vocation: “To love Christ in His Passion, and to be there for others in theirs – that is our unique vocation as Passionists – to live with passion, to make a difference.”
