Granddaughter of the Queen of England, Princess Elizabeth, was very well known to the inhabitants of Moscow's homeless shelters.
She was the wife of the brother of Alexander III, and her own sister was the wife of Nicholas II. In 1905, the Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich was killed by a terrorist.
Elizabeth forgave the murderer of her husband and even asked for mercy on him, but her request was denied. Having become a widow, the princess sold her jewelry and devoted herself to charity. She established the unique Marfo-Mariinsky Convent, the sisters of this convent were engaged in social and medical work. Elizabeth worked with alongside with the sisters. She regularly visited the homeless shelters of the famous Hitrovka. At the same time, criticism of Rasputin complicated her relations with the tsar. After the revolution, the princess refused to leave Russia, was arrested, and then killed by the Bolsheviks. The Orthodox Church canonized her. And the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent was revived and continues its ministry today.
The clips have been created by the interregional public organization of large families "The Big Family" with the support of the Presidential Grants Fund. The information partner of the project is the Orthodox magazine "Foma".
