Six days later, The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters. Its opening crawl — the sacred blue text, the Skywalker saga's final chapter — begins with three words: "The dead speak!" And then it explains that the galaxy has heard a mysterious broadcast. A threat of revenge. In the late Emperor's voice.

That broadcast? The one referenced in the crawl of the ninth mainline Star Wars film? It premiered inside a battle royale game where people build walls and hit each other with pickaxes.

Which means either Fortnite exists somewhere within the Star Wars universe, or Star Wars exists within Fortnite's, or — and this is the option that breaks your brain if you think about it too long — both are somehow true simultaneously. Lucasfilm's Story Group never issued a clean, definitive ruling. No statement from Pablo Hidalgo or Matt Martin drew a hard line. The event just... happened. Canonically. And everyone sort of moved on, because to engage with the implication seriously would crack open a question that Star Wars has been desperately avoiding for almost fifty years.
