Описание:
This Rondo is an extract from act II, scene 8 of Mysliveček's setting of De Gamerra's libretto: Il Medonte, first premiered in Roma in 1780.
The singer for whom the aria was composed was Tommaso Consoli, a Castrato soprano who was also Mozart's Aminta in Il re pastore. In this opera he sings the primo uomo role of Arsace, a prince who is engaged secretly to the princess Selene. Unfortunately, their love is obstructed by the tyran Medonte's affection for the princess.
This aria was seemingly quite succesful as it was disseminated frequently in manuscript forms up to the beginning of the XIXth c. (It has nineteen entries on RISM !)
Translation of the lyrics:
Beautiful lights, if thou cry
My valor will be lessened
Shine more serenely for me.
Appease thy noble heart.
Thou live, whilst I must die...
Ah, I was not born, oh Lord, for thee.
Yes I'll die, but my love
With thee remains, that is the token of my faithfulness.
(To Evandro) Let's go, my Friend... (To Selene) Goodbye my dear
What an unfortunate moment!
Ah! this adverse fate
Can't be more barbarous.
