http://www.cheapjoes.com -- Welcome to Cheap Joe's Test Studio!
This is one of our American Journey Sketchbooks that we actually make from scratch at Cheap Joe's. This is one I kept up in New England. I journal as I'm doing a little sketching too, and here's some collected items glued on one side of the page and a painting on the other side.
I have a drawing here that I didn't paint when we were there so I'm going to show you the use of masking fluid and artist's tape and hopefully it will come out a little cleaner by doing that.
I have applied the masking fluid from this little bitty bottle that has this little bitty brush - just like a fingernail brush - let it dry and it will peel right off.
I have done that very thing right here and over this little house and it's dry - it's been on there for about 10 or 15 minutes now.
We're going to come in and paint right over it. But before we do that we're going to take the artist tape and hold the tape out to the length of the paper and I'm going to stick it right here on my shirt like this.
If you don't do this the tack on the tape could tear your paper when you take it off.
Then I carefully put the tape along the edges of the paper like that. Be sure that it's sealed good along the inside edge especially where we'll be painting. That will give us a nice clean edge all the way around the paper.
Here's a painting where I used the tape, doesn't that look nice?
Now I'm ready to put color on it to show you how easy you can put the color over it so you don't have to worry about the masking fluid or the tape.
I'm just going to brush this in like so. I'm going to come right on down into this middle ground right in here.
Now I'm going to add this really bold color for the middle ground area right through here. Change the color now, it's important to change colors to have a variety in there.
Now this same color will go into this water area. The masking fluid is already in the water area where the house is being reflected in the water.
I'm going to color in this sandy beach area. Now we're cookin'!
Let this dry and when we come back we'll add a little darker color and take the masking fluid off and see what we have.
I'm going to add in a little darker color now to create these trees that are right back through there, and soften this edge a bit to give it a really nice feel.
With even darker color I'll put in some evergreen trees. Go over the house area with it because I want this area to be dark.
We'll add a few rocks down in here, and we'll just run the brush over here and give some more effect to the beach right here.
Now we'll dry this. When you check to see if it's dry never use your fingers, use your knuckles because your fingers have oil in them and you'll leave a spot on your painting.
Now let's take the masking fluid off and see what we have. I have a Cheap Joe's Rubber Cement pick-up that's very handy to remove the masking fluid. Hold it like this and rub over it.
Look at that - isn't that fun? Be sure it's good and dry when you do this or you'll tear your paper. We'll take a smaller brush - American Journey Flat 3/4 brush - and we'll imagine the sunlight's coming in this way. That means the shadow on this house is coming in like that. Over here we'll do the same thing. Leave some of it white in there.
Now we'll put in the windows and a little bit of darker color with those. We've got to give that roof a little bit of a better design and right over here put the window in.
Now we're going to take the tape off and that will give us a better idea of where we are here. There at least is the beginning of a painting and see how much better it looks using the masking fluid and artist tape?
