William "Billy" Costello (February 2, 1898 - October 9, 1971) who earlier performed under the stage name "Red Pepper Sam" worked with the Fleischer Studio as the voice of Freddie Frog/Ferdinand Frog and Gus the Gorilla on the Betty Boop’s Fables radio show in late 1932 and early 1933. Costello’s Popeye was featured in the first 24 Popeye cartoon shorts until he was fired by the studio, allegedly for "bad behavior."
