In this interview renowned scholar and teacher, Ven. Geshe Lhundrub looks back on his early training in Tibet and observes the changes he has seen take place as Buddhism comes to the West.
Ven. Geshe Sopa was born in Tsang, Tibet in 1923. As a novice monk, he studied at Gaden and later Sera. In 1959 he was chosen as one of The Dalai Lama’s debate examiners at the Great Monlam Festival. Later that year he arrived in Dharamsala and, at the Dalai Lama’s wishes, he then moved to America where he lived and worked from the mid-1960s to his death in 2014. A professor at Wisconsin University, he was renowned for his deep understanding of the Madhyamika, or middle way, view of reality and authored numerous books and translated many texts of Buddhist philosophy.
