The Broadway and Commercial Safeway redevelopment has been proposed and delayed for over ten years, so a decision was long overdue. This seemed to propel Vancouver Council to just vote for it no matter what as the optics of sending it back for further revisions was just not something they wanted to do. The usual supporters showed up to insist that it must be passed and one proponent even performed a "song" accompanied by accordion, asking that the 40 storey tower be even higher.
Despite the weak attempt at humour, there were real people who actually live in the neighbourhood (accordion man does not) who care deeply about what will happen to their community. Speakers 132 and 134 were especially effective at explaining the issues and asking that this development be sent, yet again, back for reconsideration. Unfortunately, this is a city council known for ignoring residents and voting for every single redevelopment as not one of dozens of applications has been voted down.
This decision to proceed with a flawed redevelopment at Safeway seemed born out of frustration rather than true critical analysis. It was a terrible decision to approve and these two speakers eloquently and passionately explain why.
