Today we take a request from you guys and talk a bit about the quantity of light that certain orchids need to flourish. It's a light discussion that hopefully will be of use for those that don't like to get very technical about things ;)

So first, we might know that orchids can be classified as low, medium or intermediate and high light lovers. However these lines are not well defined, low light orchids don;t thrive in almost complete darkness, while high light orchids can still get sun burned in intense bright sunlight.
Low light orchids enjoy bright shade, with the source of light coming from a bright window, but without direct sunlight. Such orchids include Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilums (some), Miltoniopsis, Masdevallias and the Nelly Isler.
Medium light Orchids like bright shade as well, but somewhat brighter than the low lights. Direct sunshine in the morning or afternoon can be quite beneficial for their development. medium light orchids include Oncidiums, their hybrids, some Cattleyas, Miltonias ( • Q&A - What is the difference between Milto... ) and Brassias.
High light orchids love very bright light, direct sunlight filtered, or unfiltered. They can also get damaged by hot sun, so we need to be careful with them as well and provide ventilation and adequate ambient temperature. High light orchids include Vandas, Cattleyas, Brassavolas, Epidendrum, Myrmecatavola and other related orchids.

Another way to measure light intensity is by using a light meter, which can express values in foot candles or lux. Such a device is this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_m...
A classification of orchids in accordance to foot candles can be found here http://everything-orchids.com/orchid-... but keep in mind that the limit between high and medium light orchids is very thin and many individuals of a species can have slightly different light requirements.
