Freya, a human freight handler on the Luminous Harbor trade station, was caught in an explosion and, on instinct, shielded three young Krell cubs from a falling cargo container, sustaining severe injuries. Waking up in the medical bay, Freya learned that her actions had been broadcast across Krell networks. High Commander Fax, the sire of the cubs, granted Freya "Guardian" status under an ancient Krell law, which grants honor, status, and protection to any being who protects Krell young at great personal risk.
The Krell cubs, having imprinted on Freya as their protector, now regard her as their "guardian mother," much to her surprise and complication of her previously boring life. Freya's new status creates a political crisis, with Earth wanting her as a poster child and the Galactic Council, particularly the Ixelon, fearing a shift in the balance of power. Despite attempts by Earth, the Galactic Council, and even a rogue Krell warrior to dissuade her, Freya ultimately accepts her role as the reluctant "guardian of the small," expanding her protection to other vulnerable, non-Krell young on the station.
