Why did Jesus so often go up on a mountain to pray?
Throughout the Gospels, we see a pattern. In Luke 6, Jesus spent the night in prayer before choosing the twelve apostles. In Matthew 14 and Mark 6, He retreated to a mountain after feeding the five thousand. In Luke 9, He took Peter, James, and John up a mountain to pray. And in Matthew 26, He went to the Mount of Olives before His arrest.
Again and again, Jesus chose the mountains.
Why?
Solitude can be found in many places. The ocean. The desert. Quiet fields. Yet Scripture repeatedly shows Him withdrawing to higher ground, away from the crowds, to spend intentional time with the Father.
In this video, filmed in the breathtaking beauty of Grand Teton National Park, we reflect on the connection between mountains, solitude, and prayer. There is something about the mountains that quiets the noise of life. The higher we climb, the fewer the distractions. The stillness brings perspective. Creation itself points to its Creator.
Is our love for the mountains simply human nature? Is it scientific? Or did God design us with an intrinsic desire to seek Him in stillness?
As we take in the rugged landscapes, wildlife, sunrises, and vast skies, we’re reminded that faith and creation are not at odds. The intricate design of nature speaks of intentional beauty. The same God who created the mountains invites us to lay our burdens at His feet.
One simple but powerful reminder shared in this video:
“When I don’t understand, I just have to pray and lay it at God’s feet… then refuse to pick it up again.”
That is prayer with faith.
If you need encouragement to step away from the noise, seek solitude, and spend intentional time with God, this reflection is for you.
Take a deep breath. Be still. And pray.
