At the center of the operation is an unusual partnership — a fast-moving rum-runner on the river and a jazz singer in a Woodward Avenue speakeasy. While boats move whiskey across the Detroit River, the singer sends coded signals through her performances, warning when the docks are clear and when danger is coming.

In Detroit, 1928, the river between Windsor and the Motor City became one of the busiest smuggling corridors in North America. Fast boats cut through the current while the city’s factories and jazz clubs kept the night alive.

Inside the speakeasies, fast-moving hot jazz bands push the night forward while lookouts listen closely for the meaning hidden inside the songs.
