Alaa Abd el-Fattah, an Egyptian activist who was jailed in Egypt from 2019 until September, says old social media posts linked to him were “twisted” and taken out of context.
He was granted British citizenship in 2021 through his mother, who was born in Britain. New attention on past posts, including violent language and insults about British people sparked questions about whether he was properly vetted, and has increased pressure on Sir Keir Starmer to consider revoking his citizenship.
Abd el-Fattah responded early Monday, apologising for some comments and calling them “shocking and hurtful.”
