Fistral Beach
Fistral Beach, near Newquay, Cornwall, is famous as the heart of UK surfing, evolving from ancient settlements to a 1960s surf hub with the arrival of Aussie surfers, hosting the first British championships in 1966, and becoming a global surf destination known for events like Boardmasters, building its identity on powerful Atlantic waves and surf culture. Its name comes from Cornish for "Cove of Foul Water," reflecting challenging waves, but it's now a vibrant surf center with schools and history.
Minack theatre
The Minack Theatre's history is the story of Rowena Cade, an artist who, after moving to Cornwall in the 1920s, transformed her cliff-top garden at Porthcurno into a world-famous open-air theatre starting in the 1930s, building it by hand with her gardeners, using local granite and concrete, creating a unique Shakespearean venue that survived WWII damage and became a beloved cultural landmark, now run as a trust.
St. Michael’s Mount
St Michael's Mount's history spans millennia, evolving from an Iron Age tin trading post (possibly 'Ictis') to a significant pilgrimage site after an alleged Archangel Michael vision in 495 AD, then a Norman monastery linked to France's Mont Saint-Michel, a fortress during conflicts (like the Civil War), and eventually a private home for the St Aubyn family, who now share ownership and management with the National Trust.
Tintagel Castle
During the 5th to 7th centuries, the island fortress of Tintagel was the stronghold of post-Roman Cornish rulers. Memories of Tintagel’s past glories inspired many legends, and in the 12th century, Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote that King Arthur was conceived here.
The castle's atmospheric ruins stand partly on the mainland and partly on the island. In medieval times the two halves were connected by a bridge. Today, you can cross our own footbridge to explore the rugged island and visit the iconic sculpture of Gallos - a life-sized artwork inspired by the legend of King Arthur.
When the tide’s out, you can enjoy the small sandy beach and explore the atmospheric Merlin’s Cave.
Everyone’s welcome to relax and refuel at the Beach Café.
Tintagel Castle is located on the clifftops of North Cornwall.
