Sir Keir Starmer’s political survival is hanging by a thread after the resignation of Morgan McSweeney as his chief of staff.
The Prime Minister’s right-hand man quit on Sunday afternoon after a growing backlash over his role in the appointment of Lord Mandelson as ambassador to the US.
Mr McSweeney insisted Lord Mandelson was the best man for the job in Washington despite being warned twice by civil servants about the peer’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
Resigning hours after a Cabinet minister had backed him to stay on, Mr McSweeney said: “In the circumstances, the only honourable course is to step aside.”
