Anne Murray came out of Springhill, Nova Scotia and became the first Canadian woman to reach #1 in America. Before Shania, before Celine - there was Anne Murray, and she opened every door.
Tonight I'm paying tribute with two songs that bookend a decade of hits - "Snowbird" (1970), the breakthrough that earned Canada's first female solo Gold record, and "Could I Have This Dance" (1980), the Urban Cowboy waltz that became one of the most beloved wedding songs of all time.

THE STORY:
Anne Murray was born in 1945 in Springhill, Nova Scotia - a coal mining town that had already survived two devastating mine disasters. She studied physical education at the University of New Brunswick and was teaching phys ed at a high school when she auditioned for the CBC television show "Singalong Jubilee."
In 1970, Gene MacLellan wrote "Snowbird" - a wistful song about longing and escape set to a gentle folk melody. Anne Murray's recording reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 in Canada. It earned her the first Gold record ever awarded to a Canadian female solo artist and opened the door for every Canadian artist who followed her into the American market.
A decade later, she recorded "Could I Have This Dance" for the Urban Cowboy soundtrack starring John Travolta. Written by Wayland Holyfield and Bob House, the simple country waltz went to #1 on the country charts and became one of the most requested songs at weddings across North America. It was also used as the theme song for Anne Murray's TV specials.
Over her career, Anne Murray sold over 55 million albums, won four Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. She retired in 2008 after nearly four decades of hits.
MUSICAL NOTES:
Snowbird:
• Key: C major
• Tempo: ~120 BPM (moderate country-folk)
• Style: Country-folk crossover, gentle and flowing
• Signature Elements: Lilting rhythm, rising chorus melody

• Key: A major
• Tempo: ~90 BPM (slow waltz, 3/4 time)
• Style: Country waltz ballad, romantic and intimate
• Signature Elements: 3/4 waltz feel, warm A-D-E progression
PERFORMANCE TIPS:
• "Snowbird" needs light, flowing strumming - let it sway like a bird on the wind
• "Could I Have This Dance" is an intimate waltz - softer and more tender
• The contrast between these two songs is the whole point - youthful longing then mature love
• Let the transition between songs breathe - the energy shift is part of the story
