Pegasus Bridge was the first strategic objective of the Normandy invasion! The bridge was needed in order for the invading allied forces to break out from Normandy.
Three Horsa Gliders landed as close as 43m from the bridge ... catching the German defenders completely by surprise! In Capturing the bridge, the British Forces lost just two men ... Lance corporal Fred Greenhalgh who sadly drowned when his glided landed in a nearby pond and Lieutenant Den Brotheridge who was his by enemy fire whilst attempting to cross the bridge in the early stages of the assault ... Brotheridge is noted as the first allied soldier to be killed on French soil by enemy fire during Operation Neptune.
