Siyahamba is a freedom song from South Africa - a song about fighting oppression and finding hope through solidarity. The English lyrics, “We are marching in the light of God," are a translation of the Swahili lyrics. In South African culture, the word “we” includes the living and the dead.
*In African traditional society, those who have died are still with us, and their witness may influence the actions of the living.
“Light of God” refers both to faith in a creator and healing or ngoma in the African community.
