A BBC investigation has revealed the “vast majority” of people who sent racist abuse to black English football players who missed penalties in the Euro 2020 final loss to Italy were actually from overseas, says political commentator Darren Grimes.
Mr Grimes told Sky News host Rita Panahi he believes since Britain voted to leave the European Union there have been people who are “absolutely desperate” to latch onto any narrative which suggests the country is “some swivel eyed, racist bigot, small intolerant backwater that isn’t worth bothering with”.
“I think it’s probably best highlighted by an example of the hysteria around the same time where there was vandalism of a mural of a very popular footballer called Marcus Rashford,” he said.
“Now he’s one of the players that missed a penalty. There were Black Lives Matter protests, gatherings around this mural that had been vandalised and the press … waxed lyrical about how it was racist graffiti.
“So much so that the police were asked to comment on this and the police actually came out and were forced to say that the vandalism that was sprayed on the mural of Marcus Rashford wasn't actually racial."
