The Occipital Bone
It has 3 Parts
Squamous Part
Basilar part
Condylar part
Squamous part - expanded part has 2 surfaces, 4 borders, 3 angles
External surface - presents
External occipital protuberance
3 Nuchal lines
External occipital crest
Internal Surface presents
Internal occipital protuberance
Internal occipital crest
4 fossae
4 Sulci
Basilar Part presents 3 surfaces and 2 borders
Anterior surface - joins with basi sphenoid forming primary cartilaginous joint
Inferior surface presents pharyngeal tubercle
Superior surface presents clivus which supports pons & upper part of medulla oblongata
Condylar part has condylar part proper and jugular process
Occipital condyles
anterior or hypoglossal canal
posterior condylar fossa with canal
Jugular process forms the posterior boundary for jugular foramen
Its lateral margin articulates with petrous part of temporal bone by a primary cartilaginous joint.
These primary cartilaginous joints helps in the growth of the skull.
