Gunshots were heard ringing out across Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, forcing people to run for cover and hide inside nearby restaurants as police rushed to the scene. Panic spread quickly along Campbell Parade, right in the heart of Sydney’s most famous tourist strip.
Video from the scene appears to show two men armed with rifles firing multiple shots towards the beach, as bystanders scream and shout in fear. Witnesses reported at least 11 shots being fired, with crowds scrambling to escape the area as chaos unfolded.
Police in military style gear are now swarming North Bondi, supported by riot squad officers, helicopters overhead and multiple ambulances on scene. Authorities have urged residents and the public to stay away from the beachfront as the situation continues to develop.
