About the Author:
Poe is famous for his creative and profound short stories and poetry, in his poetry he strove through the calculated use of language to express a vision of truth and the essential condition of human existence, his choice of words and rhythm are often hypnotic and there is a dream like feel to them. The tragedy of losing both parents while very young , and in turn the death of his beloved, young wife ensured the terrible pathos of his time were embedded within his poetry , and form part of his exploration of “ the heart of darkness.” Annabel Lee was the last poem written by Poe before his death , the poem is believed to refer to his young wife who died just before he wrote the poem, the love between the speaker and Annabel Lee may have been short-lived, but it remains too powerful to be defeated, even by death.

To My Mother

Because I feel that, in the Heavens above,
The angels, whispering to one another,
Can find, among their burning terms of love,
None so devotional as that of “Mother,”
Therefore by that dear name I long have called you—
You who are more than mother unto me,
And fill my heart of hearts, where Death installed you
In setting my Virginia's spirit free.
My mother—my own mother, who died early,
Was but the mother of myself; but you
Are mother to the one I loved so dearly,
And thus are dearer than the mother I knew
By that infinity with which my wife
Was dearer to my soul than its soul-life.
