We took the kids into the New Zealand wilderness for a simple overnight bush camp — hiking in, choosing a spot by the river, lighting a fire, and letting the bush set the pace. No rush, no noise, no agenda beyond being present and doing the basics well.
This trip wasn’t planned as a test, but it became one. Watching the kids carry their gear, help build camp, adapt when things didn’t go to plan, and genuinely enjoy the experience showed just how capable they’ve become. It also reminded me that even reliable plans — including food — don’t always work out, and that learning to adapt matters more than sticking rigidly to the plan.
We cooked outdoors, listened to the river and wildlife through the night, and settled into a quiet that’s hard to find anywhere else. Being out there stripped everything back and made space for the kind of conversations and moments that don’t happen in everyday life.
This is a real family camping trip in the New Zealand backcountry — honest, imperfect, and grounded in the outdoors.
