STORYLINE
Israel pounded Lebanon on Thursday on day 16 of its air campaign a day after suffering its highest one-day casualty toll in fighting with Hezbollah, with nine soldiers killed.
Israeli fighter jets carried out more than 30 bombing runs in Iqlim al Tuffah, a highland, apple-growing region in the south where Hezbollah is believed to have offices and bases, officials and witnesses said.
Strikes were also launched on a road near the Lebanese-Syrian border wounding two soldiers and a civilian, Lebanese officials said.
Three trucks carrying vegetables were also hit in the Bekaa Valley and another on a road between Syria and Beirut.
The Israeli military warned Lebanese in the south on Thursday that their villages would be "totally destroyed" if missiles are fired from them.
The Israeli government met in Jerusalem to decide whether to broaden the Lebanon offensive.
An Israeli Cabinet minister said world powers' lack of agreement on a ceasefire this week gave Israel a green light to press deeper to wipe out Hezbollah guerrillas and called for stronger firepower.
Meanwhile, Al-Qaida threatened new attacks in response to Israel's assault on Lebanon and Gaza.
