Bloomsday started in 1977 and is a race that happens every year in early May in Spokane, Washington. The race is such a big deal mainly because it's 12 km, or 7.46 miles - a pretty rare distance. There are also many different divisions, including elite, wheelchairs, walkers, and everything in between - and each group has a different start. The race starts and ends in downtown Spokane but winds through a lot of the city — and much of the course has views of the Spokane river and other scenery.
Bloomsday is so fun because it's not just a race, but an event. A lot of the town participates in some way. This was my first year in town so I did not think to do it - but Eric did it and really enjoyed it. He even received a letter in the mail with his time and positioning for his age and overall, which was a fun extra touch to the whole experience.
If you are near the area, Bloomsday is a super fun race to participate in - or if you're like me, just go and cheer on all the runners.
