Nury Halmämedov introduced Turkmen music to a global audience by adapting traditional music for symphonic orchestras. He is famous for his operas, ballets and musicals based on Turkmen literature and poetry, as well as writing the music for many films. His score for the historic Soviet film Şükür Bagşy brought him instant fame at the age of twenty-two but unfortunately he didn't live to receive most of the titles he was awarded, including the Magtymguly State Award and the State Prize of the USSR.
Gyzlaryň aýdymy (The Song of the Girls) is a piece of music from Halmämedov’s orchestral score to the 1966 film Aýgytly Ädim (The Decisive Step), which we have arranged for string quartet.
