This camera is situated in the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans of the Kalahari Desert – the destination of Botswana’s zebra migration, Africa’s longest terrestrial wildlife migration. Each year, thousands of zebra travel over 500 kilometres from the Okavango Delta to graze on the nutrient-rich grasses that emerge in these vast pans between November and April. The artificial waterhole provides a vital source of water for the migrating herds during this period, while throughout the rest of the year it continues to attract an exciting diversity of wildlife, including some of Africa’s most iconic predators and a fascinating array of nocturnal creatures. This waterhole is known to be regularly visited by black-maned lions and families of cheetah, along with other rare species to look out for. Ancient San Bushmen wells can also be found surrounding the site, a reminder of the deep human history of this landscape.
