In this powerful and emotional episode of the Cancer Interviews podcast, host Bruce Morton speaks with Asa Newell, a remarkable young man who shares his deeply personal journey surviving testicular cancer. Diagnosed at just sixteen years old, Asa’s story is one of courage, resilience, and education—an eye-opening look at how young men can face, fight, and ultimately overcome cancer.
Location: Mount Vernon, Illinois → Indiana University Health, Indianapolis
Asa underwent the BEP chemotherapy regimen, a standard but rigorous treatment for testicular cancer that includes:
B: Bleomycin
E: Etoposide
P: Cisplatin
Though he had to stop bleomycin after the first round due to complications, Asa completed four full rounds of etoposide and cisplatin, facing extreme fatigue, nausea, appetite changes, and ongoing hair loss. Yet through all the adversity, Asa remained committed to healing, supported by his family, teachers, and medical team.
Despite challenges such as a fungal lung infection and metastasis to the lungs, follow-up surgeries and continued treatment led to clean scans and no recurrence. His story is a testament to the effectiveness of BEP chemotherapy and the critical importance of early detection.

Asa addresses a critical issue: the misconceptions surrounding testicular cancer. Asa advocates for better education, early awareness, and routine self-checks to help more young men catch cancer early and survive.

“Be positive and stay positive. Don’t quit—ever. Even when you become a survivor, keep pushing forward.”
