To write the structure for organic molecule Propanone (also called acetone and dimethyl ketone) we’ll start by writing a three carbon chain. Propanone is a ketone with three carbon atoms connected to an oxygen atom with double bond.
Since it is Propanone we’ll put an oxygen atom double bonded to Carbon atom number two. This gives us the correct structure for Propanone.
Note that Propanone is also called 2-Propanone and Propan-2-one (the preferred IUPAC name).
We can also write the structure using straight lines without the element symbols, which is a sort of molecular structure shorthand. Finally, we could represent the structure with molecular models to provide further information about the molecular geometry.
