The Congress is the new movie from director Ari Folman who made the award-winning animation Waltz with Bashir. It's half animated and half not - the first half hour isn't animated and it stars Robin Wright as an ageing actress called Robin Wright, but it's slightly divorced from reality. Her agent played by Harvey Keitel - doing that thing where you can't quite tell whether he's being good or awful - turns up and offers her a proposition: she can get scanned into a computer, the studio will pay her a fee, and she never acts again. That's when things start to go a bit weird in that in the next section, the rest of the movie, Robin Wright in the future goes into an animated world where everybody is taking pills to live in an artificial reality. It all looks like a Tex Avery cartoon, all bulgy eyes and wobbly limbs. She meets a character voiced by Jon Hamm - I'm not quite sure who he's meant to be, Danny Huston turns up as an awful movie producer. It's got ideas about artificial reality and performance and sense of self, but it's all so garbled, I was quickly bored and couldn't quite figure it out. it's like a riddle where you can't quite be bothered to figure it out because you have a feeling that the answer will annoy you anyway.
