I bought this for $1 AUD at the local market and didn't really know what it was.
After a bit of research I discovered that it was a US military mess kit that could be used for cooking food in the fry pan mode or used at an army canteen to load up with food. It originally came supplied with utensils including a knife, fork and spoon which would be stored inside.
Once I removed the rust from the handle I discovered that it was dated 1941. Due to the heavy rust it was very hard to read the other writing but I could vaguely make out the "US" at the top under the hanging hole and under that I think it says "ACG.Co" but I'm still not sure.
When cleaning up the back of the large plate I noticed there was some hand engraving slowly appearing, there was 2 large capital B's at either end and I think another one in the middle making it "B B B".
A very interesting piece with a lot of history and good fun to work on.
