800,000 protesters and 80,000 police have clashed across France in massive nationwide strikes that have brought the country to a standstill. From nuclear power reductions to halted public transport, unions are pressuring the government to dramatically reform the national budget. With France's budget deficit at 5.8% - double the EU limit of 3% - and debt repayments barely covering interest on borrowed money, drastic action is needed. But public rejection of austerity measures has already cost one Prime Minister his job, and now his successor faces the same resistance. Trade unions and supporters are staging general strikes to reject not just proposed cuts to holiday time and welfare spending, but the entire government itself.
