The slow movement of Reinecke’s late Romantic flute concerto offers one of the composer’s most intimate musical statements. Marked as Lento e mesto, it is reminiscent of a musical approach similar to Lieder ohne Worte, by Felix Mendelssohn, in which instrumental musical form and content resemble that of the German vocal music of the Romanticism.
The melody unfolds with an elegiac clarity, and the subtle harmonic inflections may be heard as adding a feeling of longing. In this reduction for flute and piano, the writing remains uncluttered, allowing the flute’s voice to emerge in pure song-like form. – MBM
