Tesanj fortress is one of the largest in Bosnia and Hercegovina. It was erected on
a steep cliff about 50 m high above the river Trsanjka and is almost inaccessible except
from the side of today`s Gornja carsija. There are no reliable data as to who
initiated the construction of the fortressbut it is known that it wase in function until 1840
when it was abandoned and neglected. The fortress comprises two parts. The first is the
upper partof the town dating back to the medieval period and the second, Donji Grad.
Originated in the age of the Ottomans. The entire fortress has got and ara of6296
m2, perimeter of around 400m, 120m lenght and the greatest width app. 80m.
The more prominent structures of the fortress are: KAPETANOVA (Captain`s tower)
and DIZDAREVA KULA (Castellan`s tower), rampartsfor canons, a water tank and a
well. Casemates, powder-magazine, dormitories, tunnel, defense yards and
guard-houses.
The heights and thickness of the ramparts vary dependent on the position.
