A case of cyber fraud involving a fake “digital arrest” call was reported by a Delhi-based doctor at PS Cyber, Central District. The victim was coerced by a fraudster impersonating a government official and forced to transfer ₹14,85,921/- under the threat of legal action. Following the complaint, an FIR (No. 21/24) was registered under relevant IPC sections. Acting swiftly, a special team led by ACP Operations Sh. Suresh Khunga and SHO Insp. Sandeep Panwar launched a technical investigation.
The team traced the trail of the fraudulent transaction to bank accounts operated by accused persons in Karnataka and West Bengal. On July 2, 2025, Md. Sahin Khan was arrested from Bangalore. He confessed to providing his bank account credentials to Buddhadev Hazra, the alleged mastermind, in return for a commission. Hazra was later arrested from Kolkata. Hazra, an MBA graduate, had previously worked in bank loan departments but later got involved in cyber frauds through contacts in West Bengal. He specialized in arranging corporate bank accounts for fraudulent transactions.
The case has now uncovered links to 10+ similar frauds across multiple states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, and Delhi. Further investigations are ongoing to arrest other suspects, including the key associate named John, and to recover the defrauded amount.
