After an abusive or hurtful relationship you might find yourself ruminating and obsessing about the person who hurt you. Perhaps you are wondering if they were a narcissist or a psychopath and what drove their behaviour. You want to understand what happened and, most of all, that it was not your fault.
Focusing on the other person takes the attention away from you. In this video I look at how to take your power back so you can focus on yourself with self compassion, taking good care of yourself and fostering strength and fierce self protection as you heal, recover and grow after an abusive relationship.
Focusing on yourself does not mean self blame or recrimination. Rather it means compassionately embracing ourselves and being committed to taking care of ourselves now and in the future after abuse. This is especially important when dealing with issues of regret, shame and guilt for how we have acted in a relationship.
Being open to difficult feelings with compassion can allow them to act as guides and signposts to areas where we can attend to in order to facilitate healing and growth.
