“The Apology of Socrates” presents Socrates’ defence during his trial in Athens. He is accused of corrupting the youth and disrespecting the city’s gods. Socrates explains that these charges come from old rumours and misunderstandings. He says he never claimed to possess great knowledge; his wisdom lies in knowing his own ignorance.

Socrates also tells the court that the Oracle of Delphi once declared him the wisest man. To understand this, he questioned politicians, poets, and craftsmen. He discovered that although they seemed knowledgeable, they lacked true understanding. This made them resent him.

Socrates argues that he actually helps the city by encouraging people to think and examine their lives. He describes himself as a “gadfly” who keeps Athens awake and active. He never took money for teaching, showing that his intentions were honest.

Despite his logical defence, he is found guiltyom and sentenced to death. Socrates accepts the verdict calmly, saying a good person has nothing to fear in life or after death. He ends with a request that his sons be guided if they ever lose sight of truth and virtue.
