Alabama Music Office.com goes to the 9th annual Jazz Education Network Conference in Dallas,Texas to attend a performance by University of North Texas Daniel Pinilla Quartet. JEN 2018 was centered around the theme borrowed from Charlie Parker's 1945 composition, "Now's the Time!"
Originally from Bogotá Colombia, Daniel Pinilla has been making a name for himself as a guitarist and composer in his home country and in the Dallas/Forth area in Texas. As student in the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Daniel studied with Richard Narváez and Enrique Mendoza. Daniel is part of a new generation of emergent jazz guitarists from Colombia with an international career and prominence.
Currently Daniel works actively as a guitarist, composer, and educator. While working in his Doctoral degree in performance, Daniel holds a Teaching Fellowship at UNT as private instructor for jazz major students, as well as directing the L-5 electric guitar ensemble.
In April 2017, Daniel’s collaborative composition alongside trumpeter and composer Juan Chaves Not Even a Portrait was awarded for the DownBeat Magazine in its 40th anniversary for Best Small Ensemble Composition.
At the same time, Daniel also focuses his attention on developing strategies for developing music education in his home country. In April 2017, he was awarded 1st price of $10,000 in the Sherman/Barsanti Inspiration Award at the UNT for his project developing a series of workshops for children in rural Colombia during the Colombian post-conflict.
In 2013, Daniel was awarded with the Scholarship Jóvenes Talentos del ICETEX from the Colombian government to pursue a Master’s Degree in jazz studies at the University of North Texas where he performed with the prestigious seven-time Grammy® nominated UNT One O’Clock Lab Band.
Daniel has released two albums as band leader and co-leader. At the same time, Daniel has performed in important music events in Colombia such as the Banco de la República “Jóvenes Intérpretes,” the 2011 season of the Fundación Gilberto Avendaño, where he released his debut album Intuiciones, and the closing ceremony of the Festival Internacional de Cine de Cartagena in 2012 and 2013, with the Colombian National Symphony Orchestra.
