India’s cooking gas supply has suddenly become a national energy security concern.
With rising tensions in West Asia and disruptions in LNG shipments passing through the critical Strait of Hormuz, the Government of India has taken an emergency step to ensure that households do not face an LPG shortage.
Using powers under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, the government has directed oil refineries to maximize LPG production from propane and butane streams instead of diverting them to petrochemical products.
The produced LPG will be supplied directly to major oil marketing companies like Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum, which distribute cylinders to millions of households.
India currently relies on imports for around 60–65% of its LPG, and the country has over 330 million domestic connections.
The government has also introduced the Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order, 2026, prioritizing gas supply for domestic cooking gas, PNG households, and CNG transport.
Officials say the aim is simple: ensure that kitchen gas supply continues without waiting lists or shortages, even if some industries temporarily receive less gas input.
The big question now is — will these emergency steps be enough to protect India’s energy security if global tensions escalate further?
