In episode 1 of my Ocarina of Time playthrough, the Great Deku Tree, protector of Kokiri Forest, summons the fairy Navi. Her task: locate the Kokiri child without a fairy to call his own and guide him to the grove where the Great Deku Tree resides. Navi finds Lunk (not Link!) and accompanies him to the tree, where the boy is provided a test. He must enter the Deku Tree and prove his courage by defeating the evil that corrupts the Great Deku Tree from within. Lunk completes this task by defeating the arachnid threat Gohma and is gifted the Spiritual Stone of the Forest, a sacred object that Lunk with require to avert the coming catastrophe. The Great Deku Tree then reveals that the catastrophe will involve a wicked man from the desert, who cursed the tree. Lunk says his farewell (okay, he doesn't really say anything), and the tree petrifies from the lingering curse.
Lunk is now tasked with leaving Kokiri Forest, him home, and head for Hyrule Castle, where another figure of destiny awaits. Before leaving, his friend Saria provides him an ocarina and implores to return home someday. Lunk heads for Hyrule Castle but finds the path is now heavily guarded because of a lecherous pervert that was found trespassing. Lunk weaves through the defenses and finds the person he was sent to meet: Princess Zelda. They discuss the coming catastrophe, and Zelda reveals that the man who will cause is Ganondorf, king of the Gerudo, and deceptive ally to the King of Hyrule. She foretells that he will betray Hyrule and attempt to lay claim to the Triforce, a sacred object left behind by the gods that created Hyrule and grants its owner incredible power. Zelda implores Lunk to help her defeat this wicked man, and he agrees (in his silent way). She then has her personal guard Impa guide Link out of the Castle and sends him to his next destination: Death Mountain, home of the Gorons.
Lunk heads for Death Mountain and meets with the village chief, Darunia, who is quite upset over the recent sealing of Dodongo's Cavern, the source of the Goron's food. It appears Ganondorf is the culprit. If Lunk can unseal the cavern and clear out the monsters that have infested the grounds, Darunia will provide Lunk their most prized rock. Lunk is then gifted the Goron's Bracelet, granting him the strength of a Goron so that he may use Bomb Flowers to blow open a path into Dodongo's Cavern (why couldn't the Gorons do this? Who knows?). With the path open, Lunk enters and defeats the boss, King Dodongo. Darunia thanks Lunk for reopening the quarry by gifting him the Goron's Ruby, another of the three sacred stones that Lunk will soon need.
Only one stone remains for Lunk to acquire, but he doesn't know where to start looking. Might be time to return to Kokiri Forest and check in on Saria...
