The Catalan Opening is one of White’s strongest openings after 1.d4, and in general in chess. And in my opinion, this opening is simply unstoppable below 2,000 Elo as it’s almost impossible for Black to slow down White’s mounting pressure on the queenside and with the light-squared Catalan bishop!

The Catalan is an opening where White opens with 1.d4 and 2.c4, and then quickly fianchettoes his bishop on the g2 square with g3 and Bg2. This opening gives White tremendous long-term pressure on the queenside and in the center, and remains one of White’s strongest overall openings, especially below the 2,000 Elo level but also at the highest levels of the game!
