On September 21, 1986, a historic and unlikely summit of musical giants took place at The Stone in San Francisco as Jaco Pastorius, Bob Weir, and Merl Saunders
joined Brian Melvin’s Nightfood for a
night of legendary improvisation. This performance serves as a powerful snapshot of a volatile era; Jaco Pastorius had been released from Bellevue’s psychiatric ward only a week prior, finding a temporary
home and a supportive "residency" in San Francisco as the local music community rallied around him. At the same time, the Grateful Dead were off the road while Jerry Garcia recovered from a life-threatening
diabetic coma, leaving Bob Weir, who was himself sporting a cast from a broken arm suffered in a mountain bike accident, with the rare freedom to dive into this unique collaboration. Alongside the soulful keys of Merl Saunders, who was concurrently helping Jerry relearn his craft, this
ensemble created a raw, high-energy atmosphere that showcased the deep bonds of the Bay Area scene. In a haunting twist of fate, this recording captures Jaco exactly one year to the day before his untimely passing on September 21, 1987, standing as a poignant testament to the resilience and genius of these artists during one of the most uncertain years in rock and jazz history.
