The first and most powerful cyclone of 2026, Horacio, has intensified into a dangerous Category 5 storm with wind speeds reaching 250–260 km/h. Formed over the southwest Indian Ocean, the cyclone has taken a severe shape due to warm ocean waters and favorable atmospheric conditions. Experts also link its rapid intensification to climate change.

Currently active northeast of Mauritius and Rodrigues Island, the storm has remained over the sea, preventing major land damage so far. However, high waves have posed serious threats to fishermen and maritime activity.

The big question remains — will Cyclone Horacio impact India or Odisha? According to weather experts, there is no direct threat to India at present. Still, memories of past devastating cyclones since 1999 keep people anxious. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) continues to closely monitor the system to minimize any potential risk.
