Fire protection is a multi-faceted discipline that encompasses risk management, hazard confinement, life safety, and fire notification and suppression. Operating in unison these elements can reduce fire potential and minimize fire’s impact. Too often, however, the protection scheme is guided by arbitrary codes, which may or may not be applicable for cultural heritage properties, rather than objective guidelines and principals. There is an international movement toward performance-based standards that provide goal- and objective-guided protection schemes.
This session describes fire and how it impacts historic buildings and cultural heritage properties. It examines general performance objectives and describes how different protection tools and technologies can impact fire to result in a more desirable outcome.
