This is a preview of my train journey from Bangkok to Malaysia with the Special Express 45 to Padang Besar, operated by the State Railway of Thailand. Only Second Class is available for this service. I booked my journey online and paid a total of ฿990 for my ticket. I arrived at the Bangkok Hua Lamphong train station early in a sunny afternoon and found the train parked at a platform. The train is shared with the Special Express 37 to Sungai Golok, another border town. Once the train reaches the southern city of Hat Yai, the rear coaches will split off and head to Sungai Golok.
I traveled in Coach 2, which was towards the front end of the train. It was a challenge to board the train because I had to climb a few tall steps while carrying a heavy suitcase. When I finally got on, a lunchman showed me to my seat. I sat in Seat 24, facing forwards and another passenger. There was very little personal space between us, and the window to my left was rather stained, so it was a bit difficult to record this video. There were a few cup holders just under the window, and power points are provided quite high up on the walls for you to keep your phone and other devices charged. This is very useful because the mobile coverage was excellent throughout this journey, and you may want to surf the net or keep your friends updated using instant messaging or social media if you get bored!
A member of the crew took my orders for dinner and breakfast shortly after I sat down. He told me that I can choose to have my dinner at 5, 6 or 7pm, while breakfast is served at 7am. The meals would be served at my seat and there is no need to go to a dining car. Dinner was served with orange juice, while breakfast could be served with tea, coffee or Milo. Dinner costs ฿130, while breakfast costs ฿150.
The train set off a few minutes later than the scheduled departure time of 3:10pm, and stopped at a number of stations on its way out of Bangkok to pick up passengers. Vendors started selling various drinks and snacks aboard the train. A ticket inspector started checking our tickets. Please be aware that tickets booked online must be printed out for inspection - You cannot just show your ticket as it appears on your phone, tablet or laptop.
The train left Bangkok and entered the Nakhon Pathon province to the west just before 4:30pm. I decided to try out the toilet at this point. 2 toilets could be found in the front end of my coach. The western style toilet is to the left and the squat toilet is to the right. Of course, a pair of sinks are provided outside for you to wash your hands or face or brush your teeth.
As the train entered the countryside, I had to stop for now. This is because I was so busy in the run up to Christmas that I could not finish the video in time. The full video is expected to be released after the New Year, so please stay tuned!
