An interesting experience! I had the great privilege to be introduced to Koodiyattam for a week at the UsPaar/Tamaasha Residency under Dr Ammannur Rajaneesh Chakyar and percussionist Ravi Kumar.
It was only 5 days of training (theoretical and practical), but it gave a good introduction to this ancient theatre form.
We were of course novices, but at the end of the week, we attempted (with many mistakes!) to perform a portion of the Ravananugraha -- the theatrical retelling of Ravana's attempt to lift Mount Kailash. The story is told as a flashback/backstory, after Hanuman destroys Lanka, when Ravana recalls why Lord Shiva was upset with him from the past.

Koodiyattam (Malayalam: കൂടിയാട്ടം; IAST: kūṭiyāṭṭaṁ; lit. 'combined act') is a traditional performing art form in the state of Kerala, India. It is a combination of ancient Sanskrit theatre with elements of Koothu, an ancient performing art from the Sangam era. It is officially recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Origin
Koodiyattam, meaning "combined acting" in Malayalam, combines Sanskrit theatre performance with elements of koothu. It is traditionally performed in temple theatres known as koothambalams. It is the only surviving art form that uses drama from ancient Sanskrit theatre. It typically requires a minimum of 10 to 15 years of training to be a professional. It uses sophisticated breathing control and subtle muscle shifts of face and body. This art was performed in specially designed temples called Koothambalams. The makeup for Koodiyattam is a very time taking process, requires minimum of 3 hours. Patterns of colors drawn on the face is influenced by the art of Kalamezhuthu. Colors are generated from the basic colors Yellow, Red, White and Black. Same actor can take up multiple roles in the narration.

Ravananugraha
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravanan...
Ravananugraha or Ravananugraha-murti ("form showing favour to Ravana") is a benevolent aspect of the Hindu god Shiva, depicted seated on his abode Mount Kailash with his consort Parvati, while the rakshasa-king (demon-king) Ravana of Lanka attempts to uproot it. According to Hindu scriptures, Ravana once tried to lift Mount Kailash, but Shiva pushed the mountain into place, and trapped Ravana beneath it. For a thousand years, the imprisoned Ravana sang hymns in praise of Shiva, who finally blessed him and granted him an invincible sword and a powerful linga (Shiva's aniconic symbol, Atmalinga) to worship. The theme is popular in Indian art and is found as early as the Gupta-Pallava era (300–600 CE).
