In a powerfully symbolic moment at the G20 Africa Energy Investment Forum, AEC Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk sat down with Minister Gwede Mantashe, South Africa’s Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, for a candid and forward-looking fireside dialogue — and the messages they delivered will reverberate across the continent.
During the Forum, Minister Mantashe made a landmark announcement: South Africa will fast-track domestic gas development and accelerate LNG import infrastructure to plug the current energy supply gap. He didn’t mince words: “The biggest solution is us,” he said, emphasizing that true energy security will come from tapping into South Africa’s own gas resources.
To make this vision real, the government is pushing forward with major infrastructure projects. Among them, a Matola Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (in Mozambique) expected online by mid-2026, and a Richards Bay LNG terminal in South Africa by 2027. There are also ambitious pipeline plans to bring offshore discoveries from the Orange Basin directly into the national grid.
But infrastructure is only one part of the story. Mantashe proposed bold regulatory reforms, calling for the lifting of moratoria in the Karoo and Orange Basins — a move that could unleash enormous upstream potential. He argued that local exploration and production could dramatically reduce imports, boost GDP, and unlock billions in downstream investment in petrochemicals and energy.
