We all know that the sun is rather bright, and while it is certainly the brightest thing in the visible sky, is certainly isn’t the brightest thing in the universe? Before we try to figure out what is, let’s just clarify how brightness is measured.
Brightness is measured by lumens or lux (lumens/sq-m), a measure of the total quantity of visible light emitted by a source per unit of time. But in case of the stars, brightness becomes so much that numbers exceed octillions. So scientists came up with another unit of measurement called absolute magnitude. Its basically the magnitude (brightness) of a celestial object as it would be seen at a standard distance of 10 parsecs (32.61 light years). smaller number of absolute magnitude represent brighter stars.
So here is a comparison of the brightest things in the universe along with some everyday items, from candles and mobile flashlights to large stars and quasars.
